A business support manager from Burnley scooped £5,285 on a TV game show on Thursday (29th April). Joanne Halsall, who works at the Haslingden office of award-winning accountancy firm Cassons, won the cash on ITV’s popular daytime quiz Divided.

Was Alistair Darling’s Budget speech really a Budget speech or pre-electioneering politics? As always, the small print in the Budget press releases will contain the detail. But this was certainly presented as a “Budget for recovery”. A £2.5 billion fund to assist small business innovation and to fund key skills is the headline grabber, funded partly by the £2 billion “payback tax” received this year on bank bonuses.

You may have seen recent press coverage regarding a possible clampdown by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) on barristers. We understand that a specialist unit has in fact been set up by HMRC to conduct investigations into barristers’ tax affairs because it has identified barristers as having poor record keeping generally and inaccurate tax returns.

Cassons chartered accountants and business advisers scooped the top accolade at the event held by the North West Society of Chartered Accountants.

A glamorous dinner for accountants in Bolton has been hailed a resounding success by everyone who attended. Guests at the Bolton Society of Chartered Accountants Annual Dinner – held at the Reebok Stadium on Thursday (October 15) – enjoyed an entertainment-packed evening courtesy of comedian Dave Wolfe and the Bolton Youth Clarinet Quintet.
