Exiting your business:
Floating your company

Floating a company can be a way of realising your investment in your business but it will probably provide only a partial exit as you may need to retain some of your shares.

It can also be a way of raising finance for the development of your business.

Not all companies can float successfully. The limitation does not relate solely to the size of your company but on its prospects. Investors are generally interested only in companies with strong and stable earnings and good prospects for growth. The success of a float can depend not only on the characteristics of your particular company, but also on market factors. These can be general economic factors, and also ones relating to your particular market. For example, high technology companies have swung from being in vogue to out of fashion in recent times.

There are three markets on which you could choose to float your company:

  1. OFEX

  2. AIM (Alternative Investment Market)

  3. Stock Exchange Main Market

Investors will normally look for higher rates of return on OFEX and AIM rather than the main market because the risks are higher.

Even if your company is in a suitable position for a float, it might not be the right thing to do.
