Owner Stephen Turner and his business partner John Kisbey give the customers what they want, namely top quality locally sourced produce served the old-fashioned way and washed down by the finest wines. He boasts: “There is no standing at the bar to be served but a traditional restaurant service in a casual pub environment.”

Stephen spent the first eight years after university learning the ropes as a market researcher for brewery giants Bass. For the past ten years he has been running his own pubs. Although traditional pubs are feeling the pinch, those who have moved with the times and entered the gastro-pub market are thriving. Stephen’s menus feature Pendle lamb, Goosnargh duck and free range eggs. The Sparrowhawk buys from local butchers, bakers and greengrocers and even makes its own ice cream. He says: “Ten years ago you would never see a man drinking wine in a pub.” Today wine constitutes 40 percent of drink sales. Thanks to ‘Sex and the City’ Pinot Grigio has now replaced Chardonnay as the wine of choice and Sauvignon Blanc is also popular. Stephen reveals that his all time favourite meal is a plate of antipasto washed down with a glass or two of Primitivo from Southern Italy.

Stephen and his business partner appreciate that the needs of the customer are paramount. He says: "It is not enough to be a brilliant cook. You have to understand the needs of the customer. It’s all about delivering constant excellence.”

As a perfectionist, Stephen expects the best financial advice from his accountants and with Steven Greenwood he receives it! Steven Greenwood explains: “I have built up a close relationship with Stephen and John over the years. That’s given me a thorough understanding of their business and their personal financial needs which involve a range of issues.” Stephen Turner elaborates: “Steven has encouraged investment in the business by key employees and organised our wealth management and pension planning needs – as well as looking after the company’s financial accounts. Nothing is too much trouble for Steven who understands everything about us and our business. He even sees to cash flow planning with our bank managers!”

The Sparrowhawk dates from the 17th century and in his decade at the helm Stephen has transformed it into one of the leading pub/restaurants in the region. As he says: “Food and people are the key ingredients.” Stephen’s leadership flair combined with the sound financial advice he is receiving from Cassons, is a winning combination which should see the Sparrowhawk flying high for many more decades!
