For many years we have been invited to speak on "Organising Your Finances" at the annual "Advice to Counsel" pupil seminar. We have also spoken on matters of topical interest at Northern Circuit events. Our depth of knowledge of barristers' affairs is rooted in years of working closely with barristers to manage their accounts, taxation and financial planning. The Cassons Bar Department offers all the accounting, tax and financial services you need from a single source. We can introduce you to bank managers who understand your particular needs, especially in the early years of your practice. We can assist with your bookkeeping and prepare your VAT returns. We will prepare your accounts and tax returns. Your accounts must meet the requirements of HM Revenue & Customs. They must show a "true and fair view". This means that, for most barristers, debtors must be included (there are special rules in the first seven years of practice.) as well as partially completed work, where there is a right to consideration. If you use figures which are unnecessarily high, you will pay too much tax. Too low, and you could be liable for penalties. Cassons can give you the guidance you need. As a self employed person you must complete a personal tax return and pay tax each January and July. We will complete your return for you and advise you of your liabilities and when they need to be paid. Provided you send us the information we need when we request it, we will be able to advise you well in advance of tax payment dates so you can plan accordingly. We play a full role in your financial planning, whether it's arranging the finance on a new car or a mortgage on a new home.
